Rajasthan is the vastest state of India in the terms of its size and owing to this factor, there are a lot of cities in this state that are famous with the tourists. Jodhpur and Ajmer are the two favorite locations for the tourists after the name of Jaipur that is the state capital. History
Jodhpur was founded in 1459 AD by Rao Jodha, a chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs.Before Jodhpur, the Rathores ruled from Mandore, about 9 km away, which served as their ancient capital.
However, due to constant invasions and its lack of natural defenses, Rao Jodha decided to build a new fortified city on a safer hilltop — thus establishing Jodhpur, named after him.

1. Mehrangarh Fort
One of the largest forts in India, built by Rao Jodha in 1459.
Features massive walls, intricate palaces, temples, and a museum showcasing royal artifacts.
Highlights: Chamunda Mataji Temple, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, panoramic city views.
Tip: Arrive early for sunrise photography and cooler weather.
2. Jaswant Thada
Also called the “Taj Mahal of Marwar”, a white marble cenotaph built in 1899 for Maharaja Jaswant Singh II.
Peaceful gardens and a small lake make it perfect for evening visits.
Often combined with a trip to Mehrangarh Fort (just 200m away).
3. Umaid Bhawan Palace
One of the world’s largest private residences, part of which operates as a luxury Taj Hotel.
Built by Maharaja Umaid Singh during the 20th century drought to provide employment to locals.
Highlights: Art Deco architecture, museum of royal artifacts, vintage car collection.
4. Clock Tower & Sardar Market
Central market area in the old city; a vibrant mix of spices, textiles, handicrafts, and jewelry.
Perfect for experiencing local Rajasthani culture and street food.
Tip: Bargaining is common; try local snacks like mirchi vada and mawa kachori.
Culture
- People in Jodhpur are known for their hospitality. The local saying “Padharo Mhare Desh” translates to “Welcome to my land,” reflecting their openness to guests.
- Locals often wear colorful attire. Women typically dress in wide, gathered skirts and hip-length jackets, while men wear dhotis or trousers with kurtas.
- In Jodhpur, the Dave Godha Brahmin clan honors Ravana’s intellect during Dussehra, marking a unique cultural practice in the region.
- Celebrated in October, this festival features folk music, dance performances, and traditional rituals, honoring the valor and history of the Marwar region.
Rajasthan has a grandiose culture with its colorful dresses, beautiful dances and melodious music. The age-old tradition of the state can be enjoyed in the street markets of Pushkar and Udaipur. One should also try to be a part of the various fairs and festivals held in these two cities. The most one is the Pushkar camel fair, where you can shop, dance, get tattooed, and see the trading of camels and other cattle. Also, Mewar fair at Udaipur is amongst the famous fairs in Rajasthan. You can find the typical Rajasthani stuff like handicrafts, the traditional costumes, hand printed fabrics, and stones etc.
Places to Explore
Pushkar is mainly famous for the religious purposes. Most of the tourists come here for the annual Pushkar Mela that is celebrated in October or November. Besides that, the tourists can enjoy the view of huge Hindu temples and the well-known Pushkar Lake. This lake is believed to be a sacred lake for the Hindus. The popular temples here include Jagat Pita Sita Brahma Temple, Varaha Temple, Apteshwar Temple, Savitri Temple and Temple of Rangji. Additionally, Man Mahal is also a tourist attraction. You can also visit the Gurudwara Singh Sabha while being in Pushkar.
Udaipur is sort for the variety of places it offers to the tourists. To start with, you should not miss the view of Lake Palace and the City Palace, the two most famous havellis built in the Rajasthani architecture. You should visit Shilpgram and Maharana Pratap memorial that reveal the story of the era bygone. Fateh Sagar Lake and the Lake Pichola are beautiful lakes that can give you peace of mind from the daily schedule. Talking about the spiritual places, here, you can also find some beautiful temples as well. Neemach Mata Temple, Jagdish Temple, and Jag Mandir etc are some of the local temples.
