Shri Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the India’s oldest holy places. It is situated at holy Trikuta Hills of the Shivalik Mountain Range at the height of 5300 feet. The base camp of this place is Katra that is 50 kilometers away from Jammu and just 35 kilometers from the district head quarter Udhampur.
History
The word Vaishnvai is related with Lord Vishnu. Basically, goddess Vaishnavi is the sign of the collective holy strength of three goddesses named Mata Maha Kali, Mata Maha Saraswati and Mata Maha Lakshmi. According to the Hindu mythology, Mata vaishno Devi took birth in South India in the home of Ratnakar Sagar. Her worldly parents remained childless for a long time. After the promise of Ratnakar that he would not come on in the child’s desires, the Devine child was born. The childhood name of Mata Vaishno Devi was Trikuta and later she was called as Vaishnavi as she took birth from Lord Vishnu’s ancestry. The main aim of the holy child was to destroy the evils of society and she accomplished the task it by killing Bhairav.
Discovery of the Holy Temple
Legend says that the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi was discovered by a Brahmin, Pandit Sridhar around thousand years ago. He lived in the foothills of the Trikuta Mountains at Hansali Village. During grazing his cattle, he met a beautiful girl child named Vaishnavi on the hills. She insisted him to call people of his village for a feast. But by the mid day when the people arrived, he had not been able to make any arrangement as he was poor. Suddenly he saw Vaishnavi standing at the door of his hut and she told him to call his guests and tell them that the food is ready. Then she told him that she lives in the Cave on Trikuta Mountain. And this is how people found that it was not any ordinary girl and thus, the temple was discovered.
Temples at Vaishno Devi
There are several temples at Vaishno Devi. The first temple that comes in the starting of the Yatra is Bhumika Temple. This is located at the Darshani Darwaza, 1 kilometer from Katra. This pace is called Darshani Darwaza as the Trikut Mountain is visible from here.
The next is the Charan Paduka Temple. This is the place where Goddess stopped for some time while Bhairon was chasing her. She left her footprints at this place.
The next temple that comes on the way of the Vaishno Devi is Ardh Kuwari. This is the half way point of the Yatra. Here, you can visit the 15-feet long cave named Garb Joon where Goddess hid herself for nine long months.
After the Vaishno Devi temple there is a Bhairon Temple. This temple is situated around 2.5 kilometers from Vaishno devi cave. It is a tradition to visit this temple after visiting the Mata Vishno Devi’s cave. When goddess killed Bhairon, his head flew to this place and the goddess converted the place into the Bhairon temple.
If you are searching for some peace of mind then come to this holy place and witness the magic of Mata Vaishno Devi.
